Today, the hills turned into mountains, Georgia turned into Alabama, and my legs turned into concrete blocks. |
Alabama has certainly been beautiful thus far. |
For lunch, we stopped at Little River Falls in Alabama. |
The Tennessee River runs right through Scottsboro and greeted me after my descent of Sand Mountain. |
I want to take a moment to fill in some details of today's ride, just to display some of the variety I experienced on this one 80 mile stretch:
I struggled up the Appalachian mountains at approximately 5 mph and, at some points, had to stop every couple hundred feet to catch my breath. I rode down these same mountains at 45 mph and over one particular 3 mile section didn't have to pedal at all. Thunderstorms scattered the day and after cresting the first mountain, I saw the blackest, most ominous clouds I've ever seen in my life. I proceeded to bike straight toward them, taking cover under a gas station and a carport when the rains came. After the storms passed the sun and humidity was so intense it felt like I was riding in the rainforest, birds chirping and all. Today's ride was challenging and rewarding, horrible and awesome! I hated it. But I loved it!
The Catty Corner:
Erin inhaled a fly.
